Welcome to pyOpenSci Software Peer Review 👋

All Contributors

Hi there! This repository is where pyOpenSci runs our open peer review process for scientific Python packages.

pyOpenSci builds diverse community around the open source Python tools that drive open science.

Open peer review is important to us because we want to:

  1. Help the community improve the quality, consistency and usability of the open source tools that are used by scientists
  2. Help the scientific community find quality, vetted open source tools that are maintained and supported.

Over time we also hope to address the issue of multiple packages that have overlapping functionality which can be confusing to users trying to decide what tools to adopt.

How to submit a package for review

To submit your package for peer review, you can open a GitHub issue:

  1. Click here to start a presubmission inquiry - if you are unsure of whether your package is in scope for us you may want to click here to open an issue.
  2. Click here to submit your package for peer review.

Why submit a package to pyOpenSci?

There are numerous benefits to submitting your package to us for review including:

  • Get Seen: pyOpenSci will promote your package to the community
  • Find support: As a maintainer, you will become a part of our growing online community. Here, you will find people who you can ask questions and talk to about shared open source and open science challenges.
  • If the time comes, we will help you find a new maintainer for your package if you need to take a break.
  • Our partnership with JOSS means that if you are accepted by us, JOSS will accept your package too (if it's in JOSS' scope). It's a win-win.

Want to review for pyOpenSci?

Peer review is an important way to give back to the scientific Python community. We see peer review as a two way conversation that in the end, improves the quality of scientific software. Click here to view an example of how this conversation happens on a pre-submission inquiry. We'd love to have you get involved!

  1. Click here to read our reviewer guide
  2. Click here to sign up to be a reviewer in the future.

Peer review is a valuable way to boost your data science skills. If you are interested in reviewing but have not done a software review before, we have a mentorship program that can support you. Feel free to reach out to us about this on our discourse forum about this.
