Python 3.6 is reaching end of life this year so it would be safe to make our next release (v1.6.0 #283) the last to support 3.6. Need to add a warning to the Changelog and an entry in the version compatibility docs.

After the release, bump up to Python 3.7 in setup.cfg and the test CI workflow.
