Fixing broken dials page

Juraj Mäsiar edited this page Nov 29, 2023 · 4 revisions

Did you opened a dials page and all you can see is blank black page? Maybe with an error message in the corner? Or maybe only thumbnails are missing?

Sometimes things breaks. Common source of problems is:

  • browser update
  • power outage
  • system crash
  • hard drive problems (even if you simply run out of free space for a moment)
  • running some cleaning / optimizing software (like old version of CCleaner)
  • running any 3rd party software that can in any way modify browser files

How to fix it:

Browsers have auto-correction mechanisms and often all you need to do is restart your browser.
If restarting browser didn't fixed the problem, restart PC.

What if restarting PC didn't helped

Before we proceed, make sure you have a backup!
Options page often works even if the dials page doesn't, so use it to export your data to a file - from Options page / Import backup tab.

Most problems with my extension can be fixed by reinstalling it (because uninstalling extension will delete all data including corrupted database files).
Make sure to restart browser (or whole PC) after uninstalling it!
After you install it back, it should be completely empty so use your backup to restore your data (or click the Login button to download the server backup).

What if reinstalling didn't helped

If you reinstalled my extension and it still doesn't work, usually it means your browser has some problem.

If you are using Firefox, visit this storage test page:

https://firefox-storage-test.glitch.me/
(the test takes about 10 seconds and you should see "Storage is working." message)

If the storage test reports errors, your Firefox has broken storage engine and you should use Firefox Reset to fix it:
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings

Resetting profile will preserve your passwords, bookmarks and other important things (but not add-ons data, so make sure to export your dials and thumbnails to a file from Options page).
Before using Firefox Reset, I would suggest you to setup Firefox Sync - this will backup the list of installed add-ons and after the reset, it will reinstall them - then you can restore the data from the exported backup file.
