This patch is an experimental implementation of Envoy utilizing the FD.io VPP project's Host Stack using the VPP Communications Library (VCL). It is not intended to be incorporated into Envoy in its current form, but is meant to provide a working Proof-Of-Concept (PoC) to drive discussion of issues required to meet the goal of integrating Envoy with VPP (and other alternate network socket implementations. How will this integrate with the ssl library (BoringSSL)? Does VPP bring it's own? Or will you be feeding data in and out of BoringSSL, but without an fd? And if you're going to be feeding data in and out of BoringSSL, do we want to do this in all cases (use normal read/write on an fd, and pass that in/out of BoringSSL via a BIO)? |

@ggreenway yeah, but that's not a huge issue (gRPC library is doing that already with their TSI interface, see: https://github.com/grpc/grpc/blob/master/src/core/tsi/ssl_transport_security.cc). cc @lizan for ALTS compatibility. |

@ggreenway You can use SSL_* method with BIO_mem to just let BoringSSL to deal with buffers, with current BoringSSL (OpenSSL) interface, an additional copy is inevitable. cc @davidben |

Also feel free to add/modify any of the sections of the document. My intention is for this to be as lightweight as practicable. All comments / contributions welcome! I will start fleshing the sections of the document assigned to me ASAP. I have to report to jury duty tomorrow (Thursday 4/26) thus may be delayed if I end up being selected to sit on a jury. I'd like to set a goal of having the 1st draft ready for review early next week. |

Description:
This patch is an experimental implementation of Envoy utilizing
the FD.io VPP project's Host Stack using the VPP Communications
Library (VCL). It is not intended to be incorporated into
Envoy in its current form, but is meant to provide a working
Proof-Of-Concept (PoC) to drive discussion of issues required
to meet the goal of integrating Envoy with VPP (and other
alternate network socket implementations.
