What is Lüv?

Baby, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more.

Lüv is an icon theme for freedesktop environments like Gnome, Plasma, XFCE, Mate, etc.

Its name is pronounced as Love.

It features colors from Google's Material Design color palette, but they're not Material Design icons. These icons do not follow the Material Design guidelines; they have their own. So, please do not refer to them as such.

Releases

It's recommended that you clone the repository rather than downloading the labeled released file if you want to enjoy the icon theme fully.

Installing and Updating

See README for install instructions. We do not provide binary packages; please refer to your distribution support channels to ask for a package.

To update, simply issue the command git pull where you've cloned the repository.

Tip: Clone the repository and create links in /usr/share/icons or ~/.icons or ~/.local/share/icons pointing to the folders from your local clone and use the command git pull to update the theme.

Creating New Issues

Lüv works on every desktop that follows the freedesktop standards.

  • If an icon is blurry, it's missing. Report it.
  • If an icon is the default application icon, it's missing. Report it.
  • If an icon is from the environment default icons like Adwaita, Breeze, or Oxygen, it's missing. Report it.

If you find any of those cases, read the README to report a missing icon accurately.

  • In the case of application icons, if the icon is in the theme and it's still not showing up, please contact the software developer and kindly suggest not using absolute paths in their launchers. You may use Hardcoded Icon Fixer to resolve this problem.

Issues must have all the information listed in the README. It won't be fixed if you don't have all the info required for your problem.

Completeness

Lüv will eventually contain icons for all desktop environments. That means three things:

  • No.1: Lüv will not have a bazillion icons. Many of those icons are no longer needed by the recent versions of said desktop environments.
  • No.2: Lüv won't ship with six versions (sizes) of some icons; why? Because doing that makes developers not use icons properly, using an icon from the /actions folder as an application icon or vice versa because "it works" is bad practice. Icons should be selected depending on where they will be used in the interface and not randomly.
  • No.3: The icons added to the theme are precisely those required—no more, no less.

Using it in GTK 3 Systems

Gnome Shell, Cinnamon, Budgie, and Pantheon use symbolic icons. Lüv ships with symbolic icons, but they're not used by default. You can enable them by opening the "index.theme" file inside Lüv and Lüv Dark, scrolling to the bottom, and following instructions.

Using it in GTK 2 Systems

There are no extra steps needed.

Using it in Qt Systems

There are no extra steps needed.

Contributions

You can begin to contribute icons to the icon theme by following the Documentation in the wiki.

To contribute icons, create a pull request. This is the only way we can review your work. If you have doubts about the Documentation, create an issue.

  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material

Under the following terms:

  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so reasonably but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

Derivatives

As explained above, the license allows you to do whatever you want as long as you comply with its terms. Still, we firmly and fully recommend that you follow the provided Documentation to create derivative work since we would like derivative works tried to weave in the same standard of quality that we've set for the theme ourselves.

Notes

  • This icon theme is production-ready, and there is no need for compiling or building.
  • Lüv is free and gratis artwork but living costs are not. If you are able, please, you're sponsoring its development.
  • If you're looking for Flattr, it's available to download from here.
